The need for reorganization and clearing out clutter arises repeatedly in life.
What’s one of the biggest reasons we need to rid our homes of extras? Downsizing.
Those who have lived in the same house their whole lives won’t understand this event
called downsizing. Most people don’t fall into that category, though.
- You’ve got the high school graduate. Do they need to downsize? Not likely. They’re just
setting out on their own, needing their own things for the first time. But what about
four years later when they leave college? School papers need sorted. Bank statements
have built up. Memorabilia from college events remain. Then they need to move.
- Then there’s the young couple. Combining two households at a young age doesn’t
usually mean downsizing. But consider a few years later when a child arrives and they
need their second bedroom for a nursery. Suddenly they have to consider whether they
need all the extra wedding gifts stuffed in the spare closet.
- Following a career can mean moving frequently (and downsizing often). How does a
thirty-something individual or couple handle the items that have accumulated? Each
place they visit brings souvenirs or tangible memories. These items need sorted to fit in
- An older couple with grandchildren can enjoy a large space, but often caring for a
smaller home sounds appealing. When they move, how do they choose what to take
- A spouse dies, or a couple needs to relocate to a retirement community. Years of
memorabilia, garage sale finds, and clothing need to fit in the new space…or do they?
These are just a few examples of occasions when people discover the need to downsize
their belongings to fit in a new space. Change of space requires re-evaluation of possessions. It
doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old. At some point you will probably need to simplify
your life by simplifying your space and how you use it.
What will you do when that time comes?
